HSG Wetzlar handed six-figure government grant
The German city of Wetzlar has secured the short-term future of Handball-Bundesliga club HSG Wetzlar by issuing a one-off grant.
A contribution of just over US$100,000 was approved by the city council, which the club will be able to use to pay rent owed in arrears to the operators of the Rittal Arena, where it plays its home games.
Councillor Helmut Lattermann described the club as being of great economic and sporting importance to the city. Lattermann's CDU party came to a compromise on the deal, proposed by the Green party, with councillors from the FDP and FW. The SPD opposed the grant.
HSG Wetzlar was forced to rely on the support of its sponsors when it came close to bankruptcy at the end of 2009, after being unable to pay players' salaries.
