Adidas renews commitment to Spanish soccer
Adidas have renewed their sponsorship of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) - the governing body of Spanish soccer - until the end of 2018, extending a partnership which already stretches back over 30 years.
The deal means that Adidas will continue to supply the Spanish men's national team, who are reigning world and European champions, until after the 2018 Fifa World Cup in Russia. The existing deal with "la Roja" ran until the end of 2014, but Adidas have renewed ahead of schedule. This is believed to have been partly motivated by a desire to improve the terms of the agreement to reflect the team's success in the 2010 Fifa World Cup in South Africa, with Sponsors.de reporting that Adidas will increase its commitment to RFEF from US$27.3 million to US$32.73 million a year. Adidas is also responding to the defection of the French Football Federation to rivals Nike last year.
Adidas will also be supporting Spanish soccer at all levels, and will supply official apparel to every national team, including the recent European runners-up at under-17 and under-19 level.
Herbert Hainer, the chief executive of the Adidas Group, said: "We are very proud and excited to announce the extension of our successful partnership with the Spanish Football Federation RFEF. Adidas is the global leader in football and Spain is currently the strongest team in the world which makes this partnership a perfect fit. We are looking forward to continuing our successful partnership and to supporting the Spanish Federation in their future successes."
RFEF president Ángel María Villar added: "We are really glad to have adidas as our official sponsor. This agreement allows us to count on the support of Adidas, which is without doubt the leading football brand. We are going to continue our partnership with them to support the world of football in every aspect."
Spain will play their first match following the extension of the deal against Colombia at Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu stadium on Wednesday evening.
